I am just starting out playing golf, and am using my mom’s old set from the 80′s (yikes..). I am looking into purchasing a new set, or a good used set of clubs. I have thought about going the ‘buy everything individually’ route, and the ‘buy a complete set’ route, and have figured that for the first set, buying everything together might be a better deal. My problem is, I know the what the GOOD name brand’s are like Callaway, TaylorMade, etc, but all of these are rather expensive. I have seen some used sets on eBay and other sites that are Top-Flite, Dunlop, etc, and have read reviews that Top Flite is good, but I don’t want to go spend $400+ on a set until I know that it will last for a while and they are good clubs. So basically, I am looking into spending up to about $450 on a good used or new set of clubs for beginners that will transition over once I’m “not a beginner anymore.” Any suggestions as to what brand I should get?

Dunlops are pretty good clubs really, any of the cheaper club sets (definitely go for a set) are good, just try a few swings with them and see how they feel for you.( Dunlops are going for about $300 for the set (Australia) at like BigW, and I have used a mates, they hit well (he is about 25 Handicap)
Freind has a set of top-Flite clubs ( whole set cost him about $450) and he swears by them, his handicap is around the 15 same as mine. I went the other way and bought a second hand set of Cougars for $150 and then added to the set as I found what I wanted and had the money, a club at a time. (definitely the dearer way to go, but I have a bad shoulder and have a lot of specialty clubs in my bag)
Just remember, up to about a 10 handicap or better 90% of the game is in your head, the price of your clubs won’t make you any better, save some money get a few lessons. And remember concerntrate over every shot, it’s easy to lose 10 shots over 18 holes by trying to rush things.
