What Is A Golf Wedge And When Should It Be Used?

The golf clubs within a standard set are arranged in order of their degree of loft; that is the angle at which the ball will be lifted into the air when it is hit with the club. You will find therefore that a new set of golf clubs starts off with a 1 wood, otherwise known as a driver which typically has an angle of loft between8 and 13 degrees. This is followed by the 3 and 5 woods. The irons included within this set typically starts with the 3 (although 1 and 2 irons are available), which has a degree of loft between 21 and 24 degrees. Your set will top out with the 9 iron (45 – 48 degrees of loft), Pitching Wedge, which could also rightly be called a 10 iron (47 – 53 degrees of loft) and of course a putter.

However, it doesn’t stop there. While playing a round of golf the player will inevitably find himself in situations where he has to achieve a very high loft angle, usually to clear an obstacle such as a tree or a set of bunkers. The progression of loft angles therefore continues with some special clubs which are available to be added to the standard set. The greatest loft angle is given to the lob wedge which is designed to perform exactly how the name implies, that is to lob the ball over an obstacle or at least high into the air. The lob wedge has a loft angle of around 58 to 62 degrees. Below this is the sand wedge with a loft angle of 54 to 58 degrees and the gap wedge with a 50 to 54 degree loft angle. As the name implies the sand wedge is particularly useful for sand bunker shots, whereas the gap wedge simply describes a club which plugs the gap in loft angles between the pitching wedge and the sand wedge.

As for when these clubs should be used, well I have alluded to some situations already, in that the sand wedge is likely to be used for escaping from bunkers and the lob wedge is likely to be used to lob the ball over an obstacle. In reality though there is another factor that needs to be taken into consideration and that is the required distance for the shot. For example a typical male recreational golfer will probably hit a sand wedge around 65 yards. One of the characteristics to bear in mind though when choosing to play a shot with a wedge is that because of the very high angle of approach to the green the ball is likely to roll very little, if at all. Accomplished players can use this to their advantage in that they can put backspin on the ball and so instead of stopping dead when it hits the green the ball will actually grip and roll backwards slightly making for some very impressive shots.

Most players when starting out and even when they become more experienced will not have a need to include too many of these specialist tools in their golf arsenal but as the standard rules of golf allow for 14 clubs to be carried out onto the course, it is probably worth investing in at least one wedge. The most likely candidate and probably most versatile of the wedges is the sand wedge and so is the extra club of choice for most players.

Jared K asked:

Why shouldn’t he win? If a white guy wins, isn’t that racist against the clearly black Tiger Woods? And why would they make him get knee surgery? Should we boykott PGa?

Lionhrt asked:

Back in the late 90′s I got a Tiger Woods autographed Titleist ball with a COA for a Christmas present. I heard rumor he is not signing anymore balls. Do you have any idea how much it’s worth.

It’s in a hard plastic protector and has never been taken out.
Thanks but I don’t want to sell it, I am just wondering about what it is worth.
After researching it further they are going for about $3000 +.

I think I’ll put it in a safe place for a while.

Golf is a game of ups and downs – one minute you are playing the game of your life and the next you can’t do a thing right. So what’s the easiest way to achieve a more consistent golf game? The simple answer is through practice, because most of us if we are being honest do not practice our golf game anywhere near enough.

I appreciate this is not easy; In this day and age our golf games suffer because we have a lot of commitments right? So if you can’t find the time to get to the driving range or practice ground at your local golf club, then you have to be better prepared when you do get the chance of a game of golf.

I have witnessed this many times, hurtling down the road at the last minute grab the golf equipment, sprint to the first tee and before you know where you are your handicap has been used after 6 holes. Ask yourself how many times you have played the back nine better than the front nine. The majority of golfers will say the back nine, and the obvious reason being, they have loosened up by then and are playing at their normal pace and in control.

Here are a few tips to help your golf, without having to spend hours at the range.

1. Arrive earlier at the golf club; give yourself an extra 20 minutes before you tee off. This will allow you to relax and organise yourself for the game ahead.
2. This extra time should be used wisely to loosen up, use 2 clubs together and gently practice the movements in your golf swing, slowly building up to a full swing.
3. The few minutes you then have left should be spent on the practice putting green getting used to the speed of the greens for the day. If you can hit a few practice chips around the putting green, although a lot if not all golf clubs don’t allow it.
4. Reaching the first tee a few minutes before teeing off is very important, this will give you time to exchange cards with your partners, arrange terms of your game for the day etc and it will allow you to organise yourself and prepare for the first swing of the day.

Allowing yourself the extra time to organise yourself will get your round off to a better start and not the usual frantic dash to the first tee with stiff muscles trying to make a decent golf swing, then finding yourself off to the usual bad tee shot and resulting poor golf until you warm up and start to relax.

DON’T DO IT  !!!!!!!!!

Do yourself and your golf game a huge favour by following this simple guide, and give yourself the best chance to enjoy those precious few hours at your golf club. You owe it to yourself to get the best out of your game of golf.

Rob asked:

How much should I expect to get at auction for my 1997 Masters Golf Tournament dark green cloth lawn chair purchased at the 1997 Masters that was signed by Tiger Woods himself at one of the practice rounds? (the chair is extremely high quality/like a “directors chair”) It is in perfect condition. It’s been sitting in my office for years. I cant find any other chairs signed by the man so Im really unsure of the value. No one seems to be willing to give me an estimate.

What Is A Golf Wedge And When Should It Be Used?

Golf has been played for a long, long time, and still it’s exact origins are unclear. The origin of golf is a much discussed topic and is open to debate as to to whether the Chinese, Dutch or Scottish were the first. Some historians trace golf history back to a Dutch game called het kolven, then there’s the French and Belgian game called chole, another French game called jeu de mail, and would you believe an English game called cambuca.

Other theories concluded that golf evolved from croquet, in my opinion they must have been drinking quite heavily to come up with that one, it’s more plausible that it’s the other way around. The arguments still continue to this day as to who first played golf, but the undeniable fact with regard to the origins of golf is, that golf was first played in the form we know it in Scotland.

The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers in a village called Gullane, near Edinburgh Scotland, is recognized as the first organized golf-club, they are based at Muirfield and claim their club was already formed in 1744.

The first British Open was played in 1860 and was won by Willie Park snr at Prestwick Golf Club with a score of 174. The oldest championship in all of golf, the British Open – which is commonly known simply as “The Open,” is the third event to be played during the year of the four major tournaments in golf. The Open Championship still holds tight the roots of its prestigious history; spending its formative years exclusively in Scotland, the tournament retains a rich Scottish vein.

The US open arrived 35 years after the first British open was contested, but the Open Championship has been a global event since the turn of the century with the U.S. Open moving in that direction for the last decade. But “The Open” retains the honour of being the most prestigious and most sort after piece of silverware in the history of golf.

It’s believed that golf was played in America during the colonial period, but no documented proof can be found anywhere. When the golf boom got a hold of the USA in the 20th century, America became the world leader in great players. By 1900, the explosion of the game in America was complete.  As proven by the fact that at the turn of the century, there were more golf-clubs in the USA than there were in the United Kingdom.

In 1996 a young golf prodigy called Tiger Woods arrived upon the scene. He won eight times in 1999, nine fold in 2000, and won the four major championships in succession in 2000-2001, his epic achievement started with the U.S. Open in 2000, this later became known as the “Tiger Slam”. Should his career be as impressive in his 30s and 40s as it has been in his 20s, he will assume the mantle of “best player ever.” And take over from jack Nicklaus as the greatest golfer in the history of this amazing game.

Not many people believed it was possible to challenge Jack Nicklaus’s Major Golf Championship record, but as things stand at the moment it could well be that, Tigers Record in Majors will be the one all Professional Golfers have to aspire to.

Resembling the socks, golf club covers are worn to keep the golf clubs. Usually, they are made of woods. Nevertheless, the concept of golf club covers can widen to the rest of the clubs bag too as the idea of iron covers is turning to quite popular.

The golf club covers do a lot for your golf club. They shield your club in the damp and rain weather. If you place your bag in cut grass then the golf club covers will ascertain the grass doesn’t wrap your clubs.

Moreover, the golf club covers shield your clubs from each other since golf clubs can become broken by banging around into each other when in your bag. It accustomed to be that golf club covers were very basic items that looked like socks and had on them the number of the club that was being covered.

Unlike a very basic set, a very exclusive golf club covers set has a special look and they usually served the same use. The whole new industry was born eventually after golfers started to state their personality through their golf club covers.

It has been around for a while now. Your big burly friend from work would put a gorilla golf club cover on his driver as he felt that he projected lots of power with his driver. Sometimes the covers would enter sets of what looked like puppets and they would have entire families of covers to use on clubs that would express a little personality in an otherwise solemn game.

Then, not too long ago, someone came along that changed everything and caused a boom in the sales of covers all over the world. That person was Tiger Woods.

Tiger and His Boy Frank

Tiger Woods come apart onto the golf scene as a novice and a golfer had not been so anticipated since Jack Nicklaus.  It did not take long for people to begin to see that the golf club cover covering Tiger’s driver was a tiger. Abruptly the trades of tiger driver covers took off and people all over the world were sporting their Tiger Woods’ driver cover. Then we found out that the cover had a name and even could talk.

The name of  Tiger Woods’ driver cover is Frank. Some years ago, every person attained watch Frank speaking and giving Tiger suggestion due to the television commercials. This was all in good fun and the ending result was a prosperous industry that has developed around manufacturing new golf club covers.

So, what are you waiting for? Find out more about golf club covers and have a thorough understanding about golf club!

Michelle asked:

No matter what place Tiger Woods may be in during any given tournament, why are the other golfers challenging him? Why isin’t Tiger the challenger? Is this because the announcers have to justify the statement that he is as great as Jack Nicklaus? Maybe I’m naive, but shouldn’t we wait till the end of an athletes career to compare him to another in history? I’m watching the U.S. Open and after submitting this, turning the sound down!

Will R asked:

Tiger Woods the first black golfer to reach such stardom is the darling of the white liberal jet set. White Pro golfers are relagated to amateur status when he is around and the media focus is on him win or lose and each reporter has an excuse when he wins. I am labeling this the Tiger Woods syndrome for Obama Hussien.
I made an error the last paragraph should be “when he loses” so sorry.
